Emergency Tips
Tooth Ache
A persistent tooth ache, whether mild or intense, is best to be addressed as soon as possible. Pain can seriously interfere with your day to day function. For severe tooth ache we aim to first eliminate the pain and then fix the source of the problem.
Please call as early as possible so we can see you on the same day.
Here are some tips to reduce your toothache:
- Floss your teeth to remove any food lodged in your tooth
- Rinse your mouth with warm water to wash away any debris from the tooth
- Use a cold compress on outside of your cheek if there is swelling
Whilst we do not want to increase your discomfort if at all possible avoid pain relief medication a few hours before your emergency appointment. This will assist in making a more accurate diagnosis.
Please keep and bring to the surgery any fractured parts of the tooth or crown for assessment.
Knocked Out Tooth
If a tooth is knocked out only handle it by the crown (the white part). Very gently wash away loose dirt under running water. Do not scrub or remove red tissue and skin. If the tooth appears in one piece you can carefully try to reposition it. Try to fully seat it to the position it came from. Alternatively, store the tooth in a clean container of milk. If no container is available, try to position the tooth in your cheek to keep it moist.
